An exploration of the crossroads Germany finds itself at. Taking another look at the past and future of the country through family, energies, roads, and art.
In collaboration with our sister festival DOK Leipzig, which has concluded another successful edition, we are casting a glance back over the state of German cinema this autumn. As the country grapples with the near-existential crises this era of zeitenwende has brought about, German documentaries proves themselves again able to enlighten various facets of the society, from issues surrounding nuclear energy and coal-burning, to varied families of all stripes and ages, to the workings of animals, whether in zoos or roaming the streets of Moscow. Even when, as in that final case, the films weren't actually shot within Germany's borders, they still nonetheless point the way towards deeper understanding of what sits before us all. Art, here, can be a tool for charting a collective path forward.
